Quick Guide To Personal Safety For Women

Women have an uphill battle when it comes to personal safety. Thankfully, however, there are certain steps women can take to protect themselves from attackers, which we’re going to discuss further in this blog post.

Park In a Well-Lit Area

I know this probably sounds like common sense, but it’s worth mentioning that parking in a well-lit area will deter attacks. Attacks and other individuals with mischievous intent prefer to lurk in the shadows where they are hidden. Parking in a well-lit area will deter attacks by making you and your vehicle more visible. Ideally, you should park directly underneath a street light, but if this isn’t an option choose the next closest parking spot.

Eliminate Distractions

Personal security experts everywhere continue to stress the importance of eliminating distractions from your environment. We live in an age in which nearly everyone has a smartphone or some other type of personal electronic device. There’s nothing wrong with using these devices, but you should limit their use when traversing through potentially dangerous areas. Listening to MP3s on your phone, for instance, may distract you from an attacker.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

This is one of the most important personal safety tips of all, for both women and men. Whether you’re walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night or doing some casual shopping at a nearby mall, you should always be conscious of your surroundings. Take a mental note who’s around you, how far away they are, where the closet exits are, etc.

Walk Fast

Let me rephrase that: you don’t have to necessarily walk fast so much as you should walk with a purpose. Moving from point A to point B at a snail’s pace places you at risk for being mugged. Muggers often target people who move slow simply because they are easier targets. Walking with a purpose will reduce your risk of being attacked while giving you a couple extra minutes of free time at the end of the day. Who can ask for more?

Equip Yourself

Another helpful personal safety tip is to equip yourself. Carrying a stun gun and/or bottle of pepper spray could prove to be a life-saver in the event that you are ever attacked. However, it’s recommended that you receive formal training on how to use these items before you start carrying them around; otherwise, an attacker could use it on you.
